US President Donald Trump has revealed to the New York Post that he has been negotiating in recent weeks with the head of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Trump stated that "within about a week" it is expected to become clear whether Ghalibaf is a partner with whom the US can realistically cooperate.
The US president also spoke of a profound change within Iran, claiming that the old power structures have been replaced by a new group.
"There has been a complete regime change, as the previous structures have gone and now we are dealing with a new group of people. So far, they have been much more reasonable ," Trump said.
He also commented on the health of Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Trump, there is great uncertainty as he has not appeared publicly since the US and Israel launched attacks on February 28.
"Nobody has any news about him ," Trump said, adding that the Iranian leader "is very badly wounded."
Asked if Mojtaba Khamenei is still alive, Trump replied: "We don't know. We believe he probably is, but in very serious condition."
