Just when it was thought that peace had been established between Greece and Turkey, the drones of the latter have returned over the Aegean Sea. Hellenic media reports that this is the first time in 18 months that Turkish drones have returned to the Aegean, following the help provided by Greece in the deadly earthquakes.

Unlike in the past, Turkish drones have not violated Greek national airspace. But, according to the newspaper "To Dhima", the authorities in Athens have estimated that we are dealing with flights in the context of a "mild provocation".

"Bayraktar TB2" and "TAI Aksungur" drones have carried out reconnaissance movements for four consecutive days in the entire maritime space of Athens, while Turkey has also sent a spy ship to the Aegean.

Ankara, after sending the drones to the Aegean, also postponed the visit of the Turkish Interior Minister to Athens, where immigration issues were to be discussed. Migration flows decreased in Evros and Mytilene, but the same does not happen in the other eastern Aegean islands, where an increase is observed.

Greece seems to have been prepared for this move by Turkey. It is worth noting that two important developments have occurred within these 18 months.

Aksungur appeared in the Aegean right after the Turkish holiday in Cyprus. It is the first time that this type of drone appears in Greek waters. Aksungur first committed an offense when it flew from Kasos at the time when Turkish warships obstructed investigations by an Italian vessel whose main mission was surveillance on the ground.

Aksungur is built to perform surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence missions on the one hand, as well as attack and anti-submarine missions. This may be the first time this particular Turkish drone has flown over the Aegean, but there are serious suspicions that it was also used in September 2022 to photograph and monitor US-made M-117 bombers in Samos and Mytilini.
