According to a report by the American network NBC News, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is sending threatening messages to Iranian citizens, warning them not to participate in protests and to report any activity that authorities consider suspicious.
One of the messages says:
“Wise and beloved people of Iran, while maintaining your calm, if you notice any suspicious activities against security – such as movements of terrorist groups; transfer of weapons and military equipment; or provocative propaganda and psychological operations against security, please report it to your servants at the IRGC Intelligence Organization via the 114 telephone system.”
Another message, according to NBC News, warns that:
“With condolences for the martyrdom of Imam Khamenei and with the hope of Iran’s victory, the heroic nation is informed that, given the enemy’s plan for terrorist actions and street riots as the next step after the bombing of several military and police sites, any move that disturbs security will be considered direct cooperation with the enemy and will be faced with the strong fist of your children in the IRGC Intelligence Organization.”
The messages come at a time when anti-government protests have been reported in Iran. According to the same source, large protests broke out in January, while authorities had previously restricted access to the internet.
Alp Toker, director of the internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, stated that nationwide power and communications blackouts constitute "the regime's main strategy when deadly force is ready to be used against protesters."
Estimates of the number of casualties during periods of unrest vary. Some opposition sources have claimed that more than 30,000 protesters have been killed, while Iranian authorities have not released full official figures.
