Following fierce protests in Greece, where farmers are demanding aid and support against rising production costs and taxes, revolt has also erupted in France, this time for a different reason – the mass slaughter of cattle due to a viral epidemic that has alarmed the authorities and deeply angered the farming community.
In southwestern France, farmers took to the streets, blocked highways with tractors and set fire to haystacks and tires to protest against the authorities' decision to eliminate all herds with even one case of lumpy skin disease.

According to the newspaper Le Monde, the most violent clashes took place in Limoges, where farmers threw manure at public administration buildings and police cars. Meanwhile, on Friday, in the village of Les Bordes-sur-Arize, near the border with Spain, government veterinarians eliminated a herd of over 200 cows after a single case of the disease was discovered. Police were forced to escort the teams through violent resistance from farmers.
The protests culminated on Saturday with the blockade of nearly 150 kilometers of the A64 highway between the cities of Bayonne and Tarbes. Agricultural unions have called the government's approach "pure madness" and are warning of blockades across France in the coming days.
