For Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the possession of nuclear weapons protects Russia from security threats.
While giving an interview to "The International Affairs" media, Lavrov reminded the West of the dangers of a possible conflict between nuclear powers.
"The possession of nuclear weapons is today the only possible answer to some external threats, important for the security of our country."
During the interview, Lavrov said that the United States of America and NATO allies risk ending up in a direct confrontation with other nuclear powers.
"We believe that such a development should be prevented. Therefore we must remember the existence of high military and political risks and send clear signals to our adversaries".
Last month, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Moscow could use nuclear weapons if Ukraine's counterattack against Russian troops is successful.
The West is providing arms to Ukraine as Ukrainian troops try to retake territories Russia annexed after the war began in February 2022.
On the battlefield, Russia has not stopped its attacks. Overnight, 17 Iranian-made drones were launched in an attempt to strike the northern, central and western regions of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force said 15 of the Shahed drones were downed. As a result of the attacks, 2 people were injured and dozens of buildings were damaged.
