The European Union is preparing a "plan B" for economic sanctions against Russia in case the Trump administration abandons negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and seeks rapprochement with Moscow, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaia Kalas, told the FT today.
"We are seeing indications that the United States is considering abandoning Ukraine and is not trying to secure a deal with the Russians because it is difficult," said the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
“There is a plan B, but we have to work on plan A, because otherwise, if we focus on plan B, (inevitably) this will happen,” Kalas told the FT, adding that talks with Washington and other partners were continuing to ensure that Western sanctions against Russia were maintained.
