At least seven people were killed and 16 others injured in the city of Munich after a human trafficker lost control of a van full of migrants during a chase by German police.
The accident happened on the A94 highway, east of the southern German city, after the van "Mercedes Vito" was traveling at high speed during the pursuit by the police.
According to police, a federal police patrol car crew had earlier spotted a vehicle with Vienna license plates suspected of being used to transport migrants.
When he noticed the police, the driver of the vehicle increased the speed of the vehicle and tried to avoid the control.
The van was completely overcrowded and most of the passengers were not wearing seat belts.
According to BILD newspaper, the van was carrying 23 immigrants from Syria and Turkey, including minor children, one of whom was only 6 years old, and died.
The van overturned several times on the road, causing fatal injuries to the migrants, while the remaining passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for minor and serious injuries.
The incident comes just a month after German authorities introduced new border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic to stop illegal immigration.
