The Polish government is investing about $2.5 billion to increase security and defense capabilities on the border with Russia and Belarus.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that work on the "Eastern Shield" project, which envisages the construction of military fortifications, has already started.
Poland is located on NATO's eastern wing, and for Tusk, this constitutes a responsibility for European security.
"We have decided to invest 2.5 billion dollars for our security and above all for the security of the entire eastern border," Tusk said before the soldiers, gathered in the south of the country to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the allies against the Nazis.
The previous right-wing government offered a figure of $400 million at the border with Belarus to stop the mass influx of migrants starting in 2021. But the new pro-European government says the measures need to be strengthened.
Poland is an important ally of Ukraine against the Russian military campaign.
