Cryptocurrency fraudster Roman Novak, known as "Durov's friend," and his wife have been brutally murdered in the United Arab Emirates.
The couple had been missing for a month after going to a meeting with "investors" in the city of Hatta, The Moscow Times reports.
Preliminary information suggests that they were kidnapped for ransom, but after the hostage-takers did not take the money, they killed and dismembered them, putting them in abandoned bags near a shopping mall.
Russian authorities have opened a criminal case for murder, and seven people have been arrested.
Novak, previously convicted of fraud in Russia, had raised over $500 million from his crypto project "Fintopio" before disappearing, amid suspicions that his death may have been staged to escape debts.
