Getting rich is sometimes easier than staying rich. Ever since Thomas Mann wrote the family saga “Buddenbrooks,” all dynasties have known that preserving large fortunes for generations is the most difficult challenge. For months, there has been a growing awareness among wealthy families that their well-being could soon be at risk. “Many wealthy people are preparing for the worst-case scenarios today,” says Christian Kalin. His firm, Henley & Partners, specializes in serving ultra-wealthy clients.
For them, securing residence permits or passports from various countries considered safe havens is a form of insurance. “This has happened before, but the demand is higher than ever,” says Kalin.
Such backup plans usually remain closely guarded family secrets. Only in rare cases, when it comes to very well-known people, like recently Silicon Valley investor Peter Thiel, do such details become public. Thiel, who has been intensely concerned with apocalyptic scenarios and especially with the figure of the “Antichrist,” recently secured a residence in Argentina.
Even at the Swiss bank Sygnum, it is noticeable that wealthy families are preparing for extreme risks. Due to its specialization in cryptocurrencies, this bank plays a special role in these plans, writes the Swiss media NZZ .
“Wealthy families are buying properties or securing residency in safe havens like Switzerland, Singapore and the Australia and New Zealand region,” says Sygnum director Mathias Imbach, who adds, “in addition, they want to keep physical gold and Bitcoin reserves stored locally in these countries.”
The Bitcoin network is considered one of the most secure computing systems in the world. Since its creation in 2009, the blockchain technology on which it is based has never been hacked. Furthermore, the maximum limit of 21 million units creates a scarcity that even gold does not have.
Unlike banks and institutional wealth managers, many wealthy families have never had any hesitations about cryptocurrencies.
But while previously they were simply experimenting with this technology, today they are increasingly appreciating Bitcoin as an asset that operates independently of the traditional banking and financial system.
