Putin announced the transfer of nuclear missiles to Belarus, the US warns: NATO

The White House on Friday denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin's comments on the possible use of nuclear weapons, but said the United States has not made any changes related to the country's nuclear capabilities in response to the rhetoric.

The White House comments followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Mr. Putin said that theoretically Russia could use nuclear weapons if there was a threat to its territorial integrity. But he added that his country was not faced with such a need.

" Nuclear weapons are produced to guarantee our security and the existence of the Russian state, in the broadest sense of the word, but we do not have a need to use them ," said Mr. Putin.

In response to questions from reporters aboard the presidential plane 'Air Force One', White House Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Dalton also reaffirmed the United States' commitment to NATO's principle of collective defense.

Referring to Mr. Putin's comments, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that there are no signs that Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons and that the United States sees no reason to make changes to the country's nuclear readiness.

Putin: The Russian economy is strong; Zelensky 'shame on the Jewish people'

On Friday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, President Vladimir Putin spoke positively about the future of the Russian economy, despite heavy Western sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine.

Western officials and investors stayed away from this year's forum, which for decades has been considered Russia's premier organization for attracting foreign capital and is sometimes compared to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Kremlin earlier barred journalists from countries it considers "unfriendly" from covering the forum, which began on Wednesday and runs through Saturday. Moscow has imposed such a designation on many countries, including the United States, Canada, members of the European Union and Australia, in response to Western sanctions related to Ukraine.

However, during the plenary session of the forum, Mr. Putin said that: " We have not returned to the path of self-isolation. But quite the opposite has happened. We have expanded contacts with reliable and responsible partners, in countries and regions that serve as an engine of drivers of the world economy today. I would like to reiterate: these are the markets of the future and everyone understands this clearly , "he said.

On Thursday the General Secretary of the alliance Stoltenberg said that Kiev has made progress "due to the bravery and skills of Ukrainian soldiers. But he emphasized that the progress was also indicative of the support that NATO allies have given to Ukraine, which is bringing change in the battlefield, according to him. /VOA
