American President Joe Biden has asked the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, to postpone his mandate at the head of the alliance for another year.
Jens Stoltenberg, 64, was appointed secretary general of the Alliance on October 1, 2014 for a four-year term and has already served two terms, the last of which was extended until September 30, 2023.
According to two Norwegian media outlets, public broadcaster NRK and newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv (DN), citing unnamed sources, Biden is seeking another renewal of Stoltenberg's mandate until the planned summit in Washington next year, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the Alliance.
"The war in Ukraine and the still "frozen" acceptance of Sweden (in NATO) are strong arguments not to change the general secretary now ," reports DN.
According to these media outlets, Biden asked during a meeting at the White House this week that Stoltenberg remain head of NATO, a proposal he was initially given in February and rejected, according to DN.
"On Tuesday, the most powerful country in the Alliance was even more clear: this time the American president will not take no for an answer ," explains DN.
Stoltenberg has always given vague answers about a new renewal of his mandate.
" I have no intention of asking for an extension of the mandate ", he repeated today in Brussels, after the meeting of the NATO defense ministers. This information confirms the statements of Alliance officials, according to which NATO is moving towards renewing the mandate of the Norwegian.
