Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Sergei Ivanov from his post on the Security Council, ending the role of one of his earliest and closest associates in the power structures.
Ivanov, 73, has been considered part of Putin's inner circle since the 1970s, when they both served in the Leningrad KGB. During his political career, he has held key positions in the Russian state.
He was Minister of Defense from 2001 to 2007, then First Deputy Prime Minister, and from 2011 to 2016 he headed the presidential administration, one of the most influential positions in the Kremlin.
In the run-up to the 2008 presidential election, Ivanov was seen as a possible candidate to succeed Putin. However, the ruling United Russia party backed Dmitry Medvedev as its presidential candidate.
Today, February 16, Ivanov was dismissed from his post in the Security Council. Earlier, he was also dismissed from the post of presidential envoy, but according to official reports, the dismissal was made "at his request."
