European countries are increasing cooperation to strengthen defenses in Cyprus after a British air base on the island was hit by a drone attack on Monday.
France has reportedly suspended the deployment of its aircraft carrier strike group to the Baltics in response to the Iranian bombing campaign. A source close to French President Emmanuel Macron told CNN that Paris will coordinate with Italy and Greece to strengthen defenses in Cyprus.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed Italy's involvement, stressing that the country must reassess military assets in the region and respond to the requests of partner countries facing difficulties.
Meanwhile, Spain has announced that it will send the frigate "Cristóbal Colón" to Cyprus, as part of a joint deployment with the French aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" and ships of the Greek Navy.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Defense, the "Cristóbal Colón" is the most technologically advanced frigate in the Spanish fleet and its deployment in the region aims to demonstrate Spain's commitment to the defense of the European Union and its eastern border.
Monday's drone strike targeted RAF Akrotiri air base, a key hub for UK air operations in the Middle East. It is believed to be the first attack on the British base since 1986, according to reports.
