With the support of the Israeli Mossad and the American CIA, Kurdish armed groups are preparing for a ground attack on Iran, Axios reports.
As the report notes, "a ground attack by the Kurds in coordination with US and Israeli bombing of Tehran could increase pressure on the Iranian regime and encourage an uprising that could spread to other parts of the country."
It is noteworthy that six days before the start of the US and Israeli attack on Iran, five Kurdish groups that have taken refuge in Iraq and have thousands of soldiers along the border with Iran announced the creation of the Alliance of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan to fight the regime in Tehran.
According to Axios, in recent weeks, these Kurdish groups have sent hundreds of their members to the Iranian side of the border as part of preparations for a possible ground attack.
The aim of the operation, if it occurs, would be to seize specific territories in Iran's Kurdish region with the aim of challenging the regime and fomenting a broader uprising, according to a US official.
"The war was launched by the US and Israeli militaries, but as it continues, there will be other efforts by the Mossad and the CIA," an Israeli official told Axios.
A US official said the idea of supporting Kurdish factions and using them for a ground attack from Iraq into Iran initially came from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Mossad, with the CIA joining the effort at a later stage.
The same official claimed that Israel promised the Kurds not only military but also political support for the formation of an autonomous Kurdish region in a future Iran, in the event of the fall of the regime.
