Yemen's Houthi rebels confirmed on Saturday that they had launched a ballistic missile towards Israeli territory, in response, they said, to Israel's "crimes" against Palestinians in Gaza.
In Israel, alarm sirens were activated in various areas after a rocket was fired from Yemen, the military said, noting that "the rocket was most likely successfully intercepted."
In a statement, the Houthi rebels' military spokesman, Yahya Sarrea, spoke of "the launch of a ballistic missile against a sensitive target of the Israeli enemy in Beer Sheva (south), in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and in response to the crimes of the Zionist enemy against civilians in Gaza."
"The operation achieved its goal," he confirmed.
This is the first missile launch announced by the Houthis against Israel since a ceasefire that came into effect on June 24 between Israel and Iran, an ally of the Yemeni rebels, after 12 days of war.
The Houthi rebel spokesman also stressed that attacks against Israel "will continue until the attack on Gaza is ended and the siege of the enclave is lifted."
