Two German Air Force Eurofighter fighter jets took off from Laage air base to intercept a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, German daily Bild reported.
According to the newspaper, the plane took off from Kaliningrad and flew west with its transponders turned off. German fighter jets made visual contact with it 100 kilometers off the German coast, in international airspace north of Poland. According to Bild, the Il-20M continued its flight west before changing course north about 40 kilometers from the island of Usedom. It did not violate German airspace.
According to Bild, NATO fighter jets have been scrambled nine times to intercept Russian aircraft since the beginning of the year. The Il-20Ms regularly take off from Kaliningrad to gather intelligence on the military activities of NATO countries along the Baltic coast, particularly in Poland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
