Record, dangers and closer to the Moon: humanity further from Earth than ever

Extreme space: Artemis II surpasses every previous human limit

The Artemis II mission is marking one of the most important moments in modern space exploration, as the human crew has reached the greatest distance ever from Earth, breaking the historic record set by Apollo 13 in 1970. The Orion spacecraft, named “Integrity,” has traveled over 252,000 miles from our planet, going further than any other astronaut mission in history.

During this critical phase, the crew has begun a lunar orbit, a maneuver that allows astronauts to conduct scientific observations and test systems for future missions. The astronauts reported being able to see both Earth and the Moon simultaneously from the spacecraft's windows, a rare view that is also being used for analyses of the light reflectance (albedo) of the two celestial bodies.

However, the space experience has not been without its challenges. Pilot Victor Glover said the stark contrast between the moon's brightness and the darkness in the cabin makes it difficult for the eyes to see outside, while changes in vision are a familiar phenomenon for astronauts in microgravity. Meanwhile, a temporary technical problem has disabled the ship's toilet, forcing the crew to use alternative means of waste management, although NASA emphasizes that the rest of the system is functioning normally.

The mission has entered an intense phase, with several key moments planned: maximum approach to the Moon at a distance of about 4,000 miles, reaching the farthest point from Earth and then entering a solar eclipse on the way back. These maneuvers are essential for testing the capabilities of the Orion spacecraft in extreme conditions.

From aboard the ship, Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen described the moment as historic, emphasizing that the new record should serve as an incentive for future generations to surpass it. The crew even proposed that a crater on the Moon be named after the ship “Integrity”, and made a symbolic dedication to their families.

Artemis II is considered a crucial step towards returning humans to the Moon, as part of NASA's broader program to build a long-term presence on the lunar surface and prepare for future missions to Mars.
