The death toll from the earthquake that struck Morocco last week rose to 2,901, while the number of injured doubled to 5,530, Moroccan state television reported today.
A large number of survivors are in makeshift shelters after spending four nights in the open, Reuters reported.
Rescuers from Spain, the UK and Qatar are assisting Moroccan rescue teams, while Italy, Belgium, France and Germany said their offers of help had not yet been approved.
In the most difficult situation are people in deep areas, cut off by landslides caused by the earthquake that blocked roads, while tents, food and water are arriving in accessible places.
A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the Moroccan mountainous region 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh on Friday evening, causing extensive damage and destruction. This is the deadliest earthquake in Morocco since 1960, when at least 12,000 people died.
