The tragedy in Texas worsens, 27 girls are missing at the summer camp

The tragedy in Texas is taking an even darker turn. According to Kerr County authorities, 27 girls have been reported missing from Camp Mystic, a popular summer camp for girls located near the Guadalupe River. At least one girl, 9-year-old Janie Hunt, was confirmed dead by her mother in a statement to CNN.

Camp Mystic, founded in 1926 in the town of Hunt, hosts about 750 girls each summer, in an environment described as “Christian spirit and personal growth.” But this summer, the dream of hundreds of American families has turned into a nightmare.

The Guadalupe River, which runs near the camp, rose more than 20 feet (6 meters) in less than two hours — a surge that caught the camp by surprise and left no time for an organized evacuation. Access to the camp was impossible for hours.

In the early hours of Friday, 107 wildlife rangers and special air units attempted to enter the camp, but it was not until after noon that they were able to enter and begin rescuing the children. Unfortunately, for some of the girls, help came too late.

Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice said authorities do not have an exact number of people missing beyond the camp. "We don't want to speculate," he said, stressing that the situation remains critical and evolving.

Camp Mystic promoted spiritual values, friendship, and self-confidence for girls. “Be the best person you can be,” the camp’s mission statement says. Today, those words ring tragically ironic as a community prays for the salvation of those who are missing.
