As Russia continues to deal with the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine and the pressure of Western sanctions, one "important" issue is dominating public discussions: the price of cucumbers.
In just a few weeks, the cost of this staple product has doubled, reaching an average of over 300 rubles per kilogram (3.60 euros). In some regions, according to images posted on social media, the price is two or three times higher. The Russian competition authority has asked producers and retailers to explain the sudden increase.
The Ministry of Agriculture attributes the situation to seasonal factors. However, the opposition in the Duma disputes this argument. Deputy Sergey Mironov stated that citizens are faced with “a new delicacy” on store shelves, recalling last year’s debates over the rise in the price of potatoes.
While producers assure that prices will stabilize as the weather warms, the public debate shows a significant contrast: in a country embroiled in a protracted conflict and under strong economic pressure, the attention of public opinion and politics is being strongly drawn to the price of a common vegetable.
It seems are so many demands from women to use cucumbers for pleasure because, the men are going to the war and die there.
