Ukraine ordered more evacuations in the east, from a town near an area where Moscow's military recently made a rapid advance, as Russian forces ramp up pressure ahead of a summit between the United States and Russia.
"We have begun the forced evacuation of families with children from the town of Druzhkivka," said the head of the Donetsk regional military administration, Vadym Filashkin, adding that four other villages near the town were also ordered to be evacuated.
He added that 1,879 children are still in these settlements. Earlier on Thursday, Russian forces claimed to have taken control of the village of Iskra and the town of Shcherbinivka in the Donetsk region.
Russia claims to have annexed the Donetsk region, located in eastern Ukraine, in September 2022.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Russian forces advanced rapidly near the towns of Dobropillia and Druzhkivka, which are on the front line, "REL" reports.
Earlier this week, Ukraine also ordered the evacuation of residents from Bilozersk, another town not far from this area, where the Russians have made advances on the battlefield.
These Russian advances come before US President Donald Trump meets in Alaska with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, which Russia started in 2022. The US leader has warned Russia of "very serious consequences" if it does not end the war.
