Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the progress of Western sanctions against Russia, stated that these measures have failed to affect the country.
In a comment on Telegram, Peskov said: “In general, we can say only one thing: this unprecedented number of sanctions, imposed on our country over the past four years, has had absolutely no impact.”
He stressed that, despite the scale and intensity of the sanctions imposed by Western countries, Russia has not been fundamentally affected by them.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that he is ready to move to a second phase of sanctions against Russia, hinting that he is very close to strengthening measures against Moscow or its oil buyers, due to the war in Ukraine.
The European Union's preparation of new sanctions against Russia is being carried out in close coordination with the United States, European Council President António Costa said today.
Regarding this, Peskov said that Europe and Ukraine are doing everything to pull the US into their orbit, while adding that the Kremlin prefers that the conflict be resolved through diplomatic means, but if this is not possible, then the "special military operation", as Russia calls it, will continue.
Russia's wartime economy grew by 4.1% in 2023 and 4.3% in 2024, despite multiple packages of sanctions imposed by the West after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, this year, the Russian economy is facing a significant slowdown, due to high interest rates.
At the same time, the European Commission announced today that the EU's special envoy for sanctions, David O'Sullivan, is in Washington along with a team of experts to discuss further measures against Russia with their American counterparts.
