French President Emmanuel Macron expressed pessimism about Moscow's intentions, ahead of his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington tomorrow.
"Ask me if I think Putin wants peace. I think the answer is no," Macron said, while stressing that the situation is extremely serious, not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe.
The French president said that the goal of European partners is "a strong and lasting peace for Ukraine" and "we want Ukraine's territorial integrity to be respected."
Macron also said the aim of Monday's talks in Washington between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is to present a united front between Ukraine and its European allies.
"If we show weakness today towards Russia, we are paving the way for future conflicts. Europe must show strength and determination," Macron stressed.
Referring to Ukraine, Macron said that no country can accept the loss of territory if it does not have clear security guarantees for the territory it remains.
Macron also said that the goal of tomorrow's meeting is a united front between Ukraine and its European allies.
The French president concluded by saying that "for a lasting peace agreement for Ukraine, the country needs a strong army."
