Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene his war cabinet this Sunday to discuss the latest push toward a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.
While Israel's main focus is to free the remaining hostages, Hamas has insisted on a permanent end to the war that began on October 7, a demand that Netanyahu has so far flatly rejected.
A senior Israeli official told AFP the war cabinet is expected to meet in Jerusalem tonight at 9pm to discuss a deal to release the hostages.
The official had said on Saturday that there was an intention to renew those talks this week after negotiations involving mediators from the US, Qatar and Egypt stalled in early May.
A member of Hamas' political bureau, Izzat al-Rishq, however, said on Sunday that "regarding the rumors of negotiations, we have not received anything from the mediators" so far.
He insisted on Hamas' long-standing demand for a permanent cessation of hostilities across Gaza as "the foundation and starting point for everything."
News of the cabinet meeting came despite further Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and a barrage of Hamas rockets aimed at Tel Aviv that sent people running for cover in shelters.
