"Stop it, you're taking us to war with Russia. You're taking us straight to World War III."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's proposal to Ukraine's attacks on Russia with Western weapons has divided the Italian government.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is silent, while Defense Minister Guido Crosetto together with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani are criticizing the method used by the NATO secretary in announcing decisions not taken at the collegial level by member states.
While the leader of Italy's extreme right, the League, once the vice president of the Italian Council of Ministers, Matteo Salvini, unlike his government allies, has raised the bar higher and demands Stoltenberg's resignation.
"Never attack Russia," says Salvini, who adds: "If they want to go and fight in Ukraine, let Stoltenberg, Emmanuel Macron and all the bombers who want war go there. Ukraine or using our weapons to kill in Russia is madness. Either this gentleman who speaks on my behalf, since he speaks on behalf of NATO, either apologizes or resigns. Because the Italian people did not give you any mandate to go and shoot in Russia".
The positions of Fratelli d'Italia and Forza Italia are much more nuanced, as they do not share the method used.
'Stoltenberg is the secretary general of an organization, when he chooses a position, he puts it by uniting the leaders of those nations and voting - says Minister Crosetto, who left the hospital yesterday after being hospitalized for several days due to illness .
"Stoltenberg's opinion is legitimate, but at this moment it is wrong to escalate the already dramatic tension. We must help Ukraine defend itself so that World War III does not break out, and we must leave open the possibility of building a ceasefire of immediately in the coming months", says the Italian minister.
Meloni is silent about this, but he sent Giovanni Donzelli, the organizational manager of the party, who does not reject the hypothesis raised by Stoltenberg.
"The government always works on the international stage in search of peace and mediations that cannot mean giving victory in the field to "arrogance, to those who occupy, to those who do not respect international laws".
Even the Secretary of Forza Italia and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, holds the same positions as Minister Crosetto.
"We are an integral part of NATO, but every decision must be taken collegially. Kyiv's elections are Kyiv's elections," says the Italian minister, who adds: "We will not send Italian soldiers to Ukraine, and the military instruments sent by Italy are used inside Ukraine. We work for peace. The messages coming from Russia also cause a hybrid war going on, but we have to reduce that."
Even the former prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, reacted harshly to the NATO secretary.
"Stop, you are getting us into a war with Russia. You are taking us straight to World War III. Giorgia Meloni, the strategy of betting on military victory - which you are suffering passively - is leading us to war. It's crazy to think of sending us to war with Russia and its six thousand atomic warheads"./ Pamphlet
