The United States has urged Israel to stop attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure as the war in the region continues to escalate, the American portal Axios reported on Tuesday, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Washington's message was conveyed at high political levels and also directly to the Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Eyal Zamir, through official channels.

The administration of President Donald Trump presented several reasons for this request. One of them is related to the possible intention of the US to cooperate with Iran's energy sector after the end of the conflict.

According to Axios, Washington has also expressed concern that attacks on energy infrastructure could harm the civilian population in Iran and provoke major retaliatory attacks by Tehran on energy infrastructure in Gulf countries.

Meanwhile, the US special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, stated in an interview with CNBC that he is expected to travel to Israel next week to coordinate further plans regarding the war against Iran.

Witkoff also left open the possibility of a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

"Let's see if the Iranians want to talk. If they do, I'm sure the president would be open to that," he said.

He added that according to American estimates, military operations have destroyed almost all of Iran's uranium enrichment capabilities.

The developments come at a time of high tension in the Middle East, as the international community is expressing concern about the risk of the conflict spreading and its impact on global energy markets.
