"We want peace with Israel," Lebanese President speaks out against

Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun has called for direct negotiations with Israel as part of a plan to end the escalation of the conflict in the south of the country and restore stability to the region.

According to a statement from his office, Aoun presented the proposal during a virtual meeting with senior European Union officials, where he stressed the need for a path toward “durable security and stability on Lebanon’s borders.” A spokesman for the president said Lebanon is ready to negotiate, but not while the country continues to be under Israeli attacks.

The plan proposed by the Lebanese president includes four main points, including a complete ceasefire, the disarmament of Hezbollah, and international support for the Lebanese Armed Forces to regain control of the areas of tension along the border with Israel. In parallel with these measures, Lebanon and Israel could begin direct negotiations under international supervision.

President Aoun stressed that the war has had serious consequences for the country. According to United Nations data, more than 700,000 people have been displaced, including about 200,000 children, while hundreds of people have lost their lives in Israeli attacks in recent days.

In his statements, Aoun also harshly criticized Hezbollah, accusing the Iran-backed group of acting against Lebanon's national interests and dragging the country into a wider regional conflict.

However, Israeli officials have shown little willingness to negotiate. Israel's ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, stated that an end to the war would only be possible if Hezbollah disarmed, stressing that there have been no concrete decisions to start talks so far.

Tensions have risen sharply following Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict, when the group launched rockets and drones towards northern Israel, stating that the action was a reaction to Israeli attacks and developments in the regional conflict.

Meanwhile, for civilians in Lebanon, the escalation of fighting has brought a new wave of insecurity. Numerous families have been forced to flee their homes and take shelter in schools or emergency centers in the capital Beirut.
