US President Donald Trump's administration is considering further easing sanctions on Russian oil in an urgent effort to stem the rise in global energy prices caused by the war with Iran, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
According to these sources, such a step would aim to increase global oil supply, at a time when transportation through the Strait of Hormuz has almost completely stopped due to the conflict, leading to a sharp increase in prices over the last week.
President Trump hinted at such a possibility during a press conference on Monday.
" We have sanctions on some countries and we can lift them until the situation stabilizes ," he said.
Last week, the US Treasury Department granted India temporary permission to buy Russian oil already in tankers at sea, without facing US penalties.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said the move would not bring "significant financial benefits" to Russia, as the oil had remained unused in tankers at sea.
However, US administration officials have also discussed other possible sanctions relief, although sources caution that a final decision has not yet been made on the scope and scale of such action.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment regarding these discussions.
The United States initially imposed sanctions on Russian oil to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.
During a meeting of G7 finance ministers, European officials urged Washington not to take steps that could give Russia major financial benefits.
"It is important that we do not ease the pressure on Russia now and do not help it fill its war coffers by taking advantage of rising oil and gas prices," European Commissioner for the Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, said after the meeting.
