'Trump aims for dictatorship', this is the verdict of the world's most trusted democracy watchdog
The United States is no longer considered a liberal democracy, according to the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at the University of Gothenburg, one of the most reliable global sources for assessing democracy.
In its latest report, the institute estimates that the US is undergoing a rapid process of "autocratization," even faster than countries like Hungary or Turkey.
" Our data for the US goes back to 1789. What we are seeing now is the deepest democratic decline in the country's history ," says Staffan Lindberg, founder of the institute.
According to the report, for the first time in more than half a century, the US has lost its status as a liberal democracy. The level of democracy has fallen to its lowest point since 1965, erasing the gains of recent decades.
In international comparison, Lindberg points out that processes that in other countries took years, in the US happened much faster. "In Hungary it took four years, in Turkey about ten. In the US, these changes happened within a year," he explains.
According to The Guardian , the report is based on 48 indicators, including freedom of expression, the quality of elections and the rule of law. The results show a rapid and aggressive concentration of power in the presidency, while Congress has been significantly weakened and no longer functions as a check mechanism.
" The legislative branch has practically given up its powers and no longer restrains the executive branch ," Lindberg emphasizes.
During his first year in office, Donald Trump signed 225 executive orders, while Congress passed only 49 new laws, most of which had limited impact. This, according to the report, shows a deep institutional imbalance.
At the same time, the Supreme Court has also played a more limited role, while the administration has found ways to circumvent its decisions. Currently, over 600 lawsuits are pending against the administration.
The report also highlights the weakening of internal mechanisms that protect the state from abuse of power. The replacement of independent officials with figures loyal to the president is cited as a key element in this process.
" This is a familiar model. We've seen it in Hungary and Turkey. Restrictions on power are removed and control is centralized ," Lindberg points out, adding that the current leadership "aims at a form of authoritarian rule."
Globally, the report notes a general trend of declining democracy. About 41% of the world's population currently lives in countries where democracy is deteriorating.
However, one element that remains functional in the US is elections, which are still considered free and open. But the report warns of growing risks, including pressure on election administration and distrust in the process.
Meanwhile, polls show declining support for Trump, while dissatisfaction has grown due to the war in Iran and the cost of living.
The report warns that developments in the US are part of a broader global trend and that European countries are not immune to this phenomenon.
According to researchers, international experience shows that when far-right forces take power, there is a high probability that democratic institutions will be weakened. / Pamphlet
