US administration warns of additional measures if Tehran does not stop arrests of American citizens
The United States has declared Iran a “State Sponsor of Unjust Detentions.” The announcement was made by President Donald Trump, who stated that the Iranian regime has used the detention of American and other citizens for decades as a tool of political pressure on other countries.
According to the president's statement, the practice of hostage-taking dates back 47 years, when Ayatollah Khomeini consolidated power by supporting the hostage-taking of US Embassy staff in Tehran. Since then, he noted, Iran has continued to detain foreign citizens for political purposes.
President Trump recalled that last fall he signed an Executive Order to protect American citizens from unjust detention abroad. Subsequently, Congress passed the Countering Unjust Detention Act of 2025, which authorizes the State Department to designate Iran as a “State Sponsor of Unjust Detention.”
The US administration warned that, if Iran does not change its stance, the US may consider additional measures, including imposing geographical restrictions on the use of US passports for travel to, through or from Iran.
The statement demands that Iranian authorities stop taking hostages and release all American citizens who, according to Washington, are being held unjustly. According to the administration, these steps could lead to the lifting of this designation and related measures.
The US also urged American citizens not to travel to Iran for any reason and asked those currently in Iran to leave immediately.
