A powerful earthquake has struck the Greek island of Crete. According to data from the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the tremors had a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale at 07:02 local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was about 18 km below the seabed, about 60 km south of the southern coast of the island, near the small port town of Paleochora.
Before the morning shock, tremors of lower magnitude were recorded in the region. The Civil Defense in the country did not report any casualties or damage to buildings and there was no tsunami warning.
"We are observing the phenomenon and we cannot say yet whether this was the main earthquake," seismologist Gerasimos Chouliaras told Greek radio ERT.
Local media reporters reported that there were still no reports of injuries as they added that many citizens were woken up by the shaking.
