White House officials have informed their Israeli counterparts that a possible American operation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could take several weeks.
According to the Israeli network Channel 12, if Iran does not comply with the 48-hour deadline that Donald Trump reportedly set the day before for opening the strait, the conflict could be prolonged to give Washington time to undertake the operation.
According to the same source, American officials have told the Israelis that a change in strategy is required and that Washington will not allow Iran to hold hostage the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for global energy trade, through which about 20 percent of the world's oil passes.
Channel 12 also quotes US officials as saying: "We will use this to make them collapse from within."
The reporting reflects the position broadcast by Israeli media and not an official public announcement directly quoted by the US administration.
