How Iranian generals fell into the Israeli trap, the message that gathered them

New details are emerging about how Israel carried out its attack, targeting senior Iranian officials among others.

An Israeli security official told Fox News that Israel managed to trick senior Iranian air force commanders into gathering them for a meeting.

"We took specific actions that helped us learn more about them and then used that information to influence their behavior. We knew that this would lead them to a meeting. But more importantly, we knew how to keep them there," the Israeli security official said.

He added that the strikes were more successful than Israel had expected. According to the same source, air defense systems and ballistic missiles intended for use against Israel were targeted in advance.

At least 20 senior Iranian commanders, including the head of the Revolutionary Guards' (IRGC) Aerospace Force, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, were reportedly killed on Friday by Israeli strikes in Iran, according to two regional sources cited by Reuters.

Mossad took several steps inside Iran to prepare for Israel's preemptive strike. The agency set up a secret explosive drone base inside Iran in advance of the attack. Once the attacks began, the drones were activated to destroy surface-to-surface missiles that Israel said posed a threat to its civilians.

The attacks constitute one of the bloodiest strikes against the Iranian military leadership in recent years, amid rising tensions between the two countries.

Benjamin Netanyahu said the airstrikes, dubbed Operation Rising Lion, were "a military operation aimed at deterring the Iranian threat to Israel's survival."

Netanyahu stressed that the operation "will continue for as long as necessary to eliminate the spread of the threat."
