Yesterday in Palermo, Italy, near the headquarters of the Regional Assembly of Sicily, a hearing of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission was held, chaired by chairman Antonello Cracolici.
The protagonist of the meeting was the investigative journalist, Giuseppe Bascietto, originally from Vittoria, called to report on the latest developments in organized crime in Sicily. Part of the session was held behind closed doors, which shows the importance and sensitivity of the topics addressed.
Bascietto explained that the meeting, which lasted almost two hours, focused mainly on the activities of Albanian organized crime and its ramifications in Sicilian territory.
"We have basically talked about Albanian organized crime, about its alliances with local figures and clans: in Gela with the Paolello and Rinzivillo families; in Catania with the Cappello, Arena and Nizza clans of the Librino neighborhood, who are allied with Cappello by breaking away from Santapaola. In Syracuse, the Bottaro clan operates, while the area of Avola, Pachino and Rosolini is controlled by the Aparo, Trigila and Crapula clans, with ties to the Nardo clan," he said.
According to Bascietto, the current situation is very worrying because "these new organizations are dividing Sicily in two, acting without the approval of the Palermo Cosa Nostra and literally going over its head. This is creating a series of problems and tensions in the territory."
The journalist emphasized that the ability of Albanian groups to create alliances has been crucial for their penetration into southeast Sicily, an area historically considered the "weak point" of the region, which had declared war on the Palermo Cosa Nostra since the Stidda years.
Bascietto explained that, in his opinion, the southeast of Sicily is becoming the “new port of Gioia Tauro”, becoming a key hub for international drug trafficking. “The drugs arrive, are distributed in rural areas and are then hidden in fire extinguishers, in peppers or in modified double floors of trucks, to be then distributed throughout Europe. The logistics are simple: it starts in Catania, continues towards Calabria where it finds the support of the historic families of the 'Ndrangheta such as the Ndrina of Coluçia and those of Gioiosa Ionica and Marina di Gioiosa Ionica.
From there it passes to Lecce and currently in the Brindisi area, where the Buccorella clan operates, linked to the Calabrian clans of the Coluçia, of Gioiosa Ionica and Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, as well as to the so-called "puorcu" of Vittoria; from Lecce the goods change drivers at every junction, until they reach Germany, where they are further distributed to reach the entire continent.
His statements attracted the attention of the Commission, highlighting the complexity and danger of the new criminal alliances that are reshaping the mafia map of Sicily.
"Only future investigations will be able to clarify to what extent these organizations are operating without the approval of the old mafias ," the journalist stressed, calling for high vigilance and increasingly close cooperation between law enforcement and institutions./ La Sicilia
