Assad fled the country after the rebellion by armed groups and his whereabouts are still unknown. His regime has now lost total control over the country, while the rebels now control the capital as well.

Meanwhile, an "Air Syria" plane, with which Bashar Al Assad is suspected to have escaped, took off from the Damascus airport at the time when it was reported that the capital had been taken by the rebels.
According to data from the website Flightradar, which monitors all air movements, the plane first flew towards the coast in western Syria, but then made a sudden turn and flew in the opposite direction for several minutes before disappearing from the map. .
Syrian sources said there was a very high probability that Assad could have been killed in a crash, as it remains a mystery why the plane took a sudden turn and disappeared from the map.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said Assad has left, but gave no further details of his whereabouts.
