The escalation of the conflict in the Middle East is also having a direct impact on air transport and the movement of citizens in the Gulf region. Prices for chartering private jets have risen sharply, with some very wealthy travelers paying up to $350,000 for a flight to Europe.
The price increase is related to the massive cancellation of flights by major airlines following the US and Israeli attacks on Iran and Tehran's response with missiles and drones against American bases and interests in the region.
The situation has created travel chaos, with many wealthy citizens fleeing Gulf countries that were once considered relatively safe. Reports indicate that Iranian attacks have hit areas such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain, adding significantly to the anxiety in the region.
In this situation, Saudi Arabia has become one of the main departure points from the region. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh is one of the few that continues to operate normally and has become a transit hub for charter flights to Europe and other international destinations.
To reach Saudi Arabia, many people are also using land routes. According to reports, private security companies have organized convoys of SUVs that transport people from Dubai to Riyadh, a journey of about 10 hours, from where flights are then organized on private jets.
Among those leaving the region are senior executives of international financial institutions, investors and high-net-worth individuals who were in the Gulf countries for business or tourism.
Saudi Arabia has also taken measures to facilitate entry into the country. Authorities have eased visa procedures, allowing many nationalities to obtain visas on arrival, making the country one of the main evacuation corridors from the region.
Developments show that the escalation of the conflict is not only affecting the military dimension, but also the economy and the movement of people in one of the most important energy areas in the world.
