President Donald Trump has said that several European leaders are expected to visit the United States on Monday or Tuesday to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump added that he plans to speak soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while warning of a second phase of sanctions on Moscow. The initiative comes after a new and intense wave of bombing by Russia, which used more than 800 drones and dozens of missiles, including an attack that hit the main government building in Kiev, causing four casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the push for new sanctions, calling them “the right idea.” He called on European countries to stop buying Russian energy, saying “we can’t have any deals with Russia if we want to stop them.”

Zelensky also supported Trump's proposal to impose secondary tariffs on countries that continue to trade with Russia as a way to stop Moscow's funding of the war.

According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, Russia has generated about $985 billion from oil and gas exports as of March 2022. China and India remain the largest buyers, while the EU has announced a target to stop all purchases by 2027.

The US has already imposed 50% tariffs on goods from India due to continued purchases of Russian oil. On the other hand, Russia has intensified energy cooperation with China and agreed with OPEC+ to increase oil production, lowering prices on global markets.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that increasing sanctions and secondary tariffs by European countries would lead the Russian economy to "total collapse", forcing President Putin to return to the negotiating table.

"We are in a race now as to how long the Ukrainian military can hold out and how long the Russian economy can survive," Bessent said.
