In an analysis of the meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which was held in the state of Alaska, the giant CNN lists the two important victories achieved by the 'Kremlin Tsar'.
According to CNN, Putin's victories were twofold: first, he managed to re-emerge as an equal interlocutor on the international stage, despite the image that sees him as a war criminal, and second, he bought time to strengthen his military position.
"The impressive red carpet reception in the US and the ride in "The Beast," Trump's used vehicle, served as powerful tools for restoring the international image of a leader many consider a war criminal. It was an image that caused unrest among Ukrainians, which was reinforced by Putin's statement describing Ukraine as a "fraternal country," despite his wartime actions for three and a half years, "CNN writes.
The second victory is about timing. “Putin has managed to buy time to regroup his forces. It is not clear whether Trump will impose new sanctions soon, but the Russian president has sounded calm, suggesting further meetings and continued work. Time is of the essence, as the upcoming summer military operation could turn small gains into strategic victories.”
At the same time, CNN notes a positive element for Ukraine: “The meeting could have gone much worse for Ukraine, but ultimately no agreement was reached without its participation.”
The analysis agrees with body language experts, who noted that Trump appeared frustrated during the press conference after the meeting.
"The US president appeared worried and tired, while Putin remained defiant, referring to the 'root causes' of the war and expressing an uncompromising stance. In fact, he warned both Kiev and European allies not to interfere in processes that he believes involve Trump," continues CNN's analysis.
Moreover, despite Trump's phone calls with Kiev and NATO, "there was no substantive agreement. The failure to attend a joint lunch and Putin's hasty departure on his plane underscore the lack of progress."
"The most difficult issues in the negotiations remain unresolved. Trump's statement that there are still "significant" issues that have not been resolved suggests limited progress on critical issues, such as the territories claimed by Putin and the ceasefire.
