US tariffs, Chinese social media "flooded" with anti-Trump posts

Donald Trump's tariffs are already in effect, including 104% on China, the world's largest exporter. Also on the list are 60 of the "most mistreated" countries, which will face tariffs ranging from 11% to 50%.

The additional tariffs on China began after Beijing refused to meet Trump's deadline to withdraw its own retaliatory tariffs on the US.

Trump has said the tariffs are vital to his economic vision, but experts warn that this could trigger a full-scale trade war.

And as China prepares for a 104% tariff on many of its exports to the US, anti-Trump sentiment is growing on the Chinese internet.

This morning, more than half of the top 10 trending topics on the popular social media platform Weibo are about the US or tariffs. However, keep in mind that the platform is heavily monitored and controlled, meaning what we can see there right now is filtered by censorship.

The top trending hashtag, with more than 15,000 comments, was started by state broadcaster CCTV and reads:

“The US is fighting a trade war while demanding more eggs.” The broadcaster had noted in his post that the US is demanding greater egg imports from EU countries to deal with the shortage in the country, imposing tariffs on the bloc.

"Doesn't Trump want to do everything himself? Ask him to raise chickens!" reads a most-liked comment on Weibo.

Meanwhile, many posts echo the government's rhetoric that China will "fight to the end."

"This is a smokeless financial war. We must not be cowards. We must fight Trump hard to the end and show him the strength of the Chinese people," another popular post reads.
