European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called on China on Tuesday to contribute to a negotiated solution to the problems caused by the sweeping tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
In a phone call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Von der Leyen stressed the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of the world's largest markets, to support a strong trading system that is free, fair and based on a level playing field, according to a statement from her office.
"The President underscored the vital importance of stability and predictability for the global economy," the commission said in a statement, following the call between the two officials.
The Commission President underlined China's crucial role in addressing potential trade diversion due to tariffs, particularly in sectors already affected by global oversupply.
The two leaders discussed the establishment of a mechanism to monitor potential trade diversion and ensure that any negative developments are addressed in a timely manner.
