"The EU was created to extort the US", Trump explodes in criticism of

The US President said that the EU was created solely to harm America.

US President Donald Trump has dismissed reports that the US will lift tariffs for a three-month period. He stated that they are not looking at that possibility.

" We are not looking at this option ," he declared, dismissing hopes for a pause.

Trump added that many countries have been negotiating with Washington and they will try to make fair deals with each of them. According to him, the US is $36 trillion in debt for a reason and his administration will talk to many countries, including China, to fix it.

"We will get fair deals with every country and if we don't, they won't be able to participate in trade with the US. The US has been ripped off by many countries over the years. We can't do it anymore. We can't be stupid anymore ," he added.

From the Oval Office, Donald Trump leveled strong accusations at the European Union. The US President said that the EU was created solely to harm America.

"The bloc was formed to hurt the United States. The countries were formed together to create a monopoly situation - a unified force against the United States on trade. They have NATO and they have benefited from us in terms of the dollar and militarily," Trump said.

He added that the EU countries he hit with 20% tariffs last week were the ones that were hurting the American economy and had only brought bad things to it.

" They don't take our cars, they don't take our agricultural products, and yet they send millions of cars to the US. It won't be like that. It's not fair, trade with the EU should be "fair and reciprocal ," Trump said.

On the other hand, the EU said earlier today that it had offered US President Donald Trump a "zero-for-zero" tariff deal to avoid a trade war, while EU ministers agreed to prioritize negotiations but at the same time respond with countermeasures next week.

Trade ministers met in Luxembourg on Monday to debate the EU's response and discuss relations with China. Many said the priority was to start negotiations to remove Trump's tariffs, rather than fight them.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said discussions with Washington were in the early stages and that he had offered "zero-to-zero" tariffs on cars and other industrial products, saying he hoped discussions could begin soon.

The EU is expected to adopt an initial set of countermeasures this week on up to $28 billion worth of US imports, ranging from dental floss to diamonds, in response to Trump's steel and aluminium tariffs, rather than broader tariffs.

The bloc is expected to prepare a larger package of countermeasures by the end of April in response to US tariffs on cars and other goods.
