The prospect of a new military escalation between the United States and Iran remains real, despite diplomatic efforts to reach a peace agreement. Such a warning comes from Democratic US Senator Richard Blumenthal, who stressed that the option of “immediate military strikes” against Iran is still on the table. In an interview with CNN, Blumenthal stated that, based on the information he has received, there is a significant possibility of imminent military action.
" I have the impression from some of the information I have received, as well as from other sources, that an imminent military attack is very likely ," he said, adding that such a development would be "deeply concerning."
The senator raised the alarm about the possible consequences of a new conflict, highlighting the risk of involving American troops and heavy human losses.
"This could include American sons and daughters in danger and potential mass casualties ," he said, noting that his information is based in part on classified sources, which limits his details.
The statements come at a delicate moment, as the US administration, led by Donald Trump, is conducting indirect negotiations with Tehran through international mediators, mainly Pakistan. The talks aim to turn the ceasefire reached on April 8 into a more lasting peace agreement.
However, despite the ceasefire, tensions between the two countries remain high. Both sides have continued to use threatening rhetoric and pressure measures. One of the most pressing issues is the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy artery through which about a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies pass.
The United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and ships in response to Tehran's threats to restrict or block passage through the strategic strait. Such a move would have major consequences for the global economy and energy markets.
Iran, on the other hand, appears to be continuing diplomatic efforts. Iranian state media reported that Tehran has submitted a new proposal through Pakistani mediators, in an attempt to advance negotiations and avoid a direct military clash. But there has been no reaction from the US on the proposal yet.
