The classic 1960 film, “The Magnificent Seven,” tells the story of a poor Mexican village, constantly attacked by the bandit Calvera’s gang, who robbed their meager food and wealth. To survive, the villagers decided to call for help from outside and found seven gunslingers who accepted the challenge for various reasons, honor, justice, profit or personal revenge. The film became one of the icons of the western, with actors such as Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and James Coburn, and remained in history for its unforgettable soundtrack. In fact, it was an American version of the Japanese masterpiece “Seven Samurai” by Akira Kurosawa.
Today, on the international stage, this metaphor is being revived. Seven European leaders, Ursula von der Leyen, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Frederich Merz, Giorgia Meloni, Mark Rutte and Alexander Stubb, accompanied Volodymyr Zelensky on his recent visit to Washington. Media outlets like Politico.eu did not hesitate to make the comparison: seven young “pistoleros” in defense of Ukraine.
This time, the “attacked village” is Ukraine, and “Kalvera” can be seen in the figure of Vladimir Putin, or, according to some analysts, even in the shadow of Donald Trump. The mission’s goal was clear: to prevent Ukraine from imposing humiliating peace terms and to show that the West remains ready to defend Kiev on the diplomatic front.
Zelensky returned unharmed to Kiev and, according to international commentary, thanks to the “Magnificent Seven” a new window for dialogue was opened.
