United States President Donald Trump said it remains unclear whether Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is still alive, while Iranian state television broadcast a statement attributed to him earlier this week.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump said there is no evidence confirming whether Khamenei is still alive.
"I don't know if he's alive. So far no one has been able to show him. I'm hearing that he's not alive and, if he is, he should do something very smart for his country, surrender. Some think he's alive, but very wounded," Trump said.
The US president's statements came a day after US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said the Iranian supreme leader was likely "disfigured" after being injured during joint US-Israeli strikes.
In the same interview, Trump also spoke about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime corridors for global oil exports, which Iran is currently blocking.
"I don't want to mention which countries can help, but you can guess. There may even be countries that will surprise you ," he said.
Earlier, in a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump wrote that "many countries" would send warships to keep the strategic sea route open. He mentioned the United Kingdom, China, France, Japan and South Korea, among others, adding that he hopes other countries will join the operation.
The US president's latest statements come at a time of high tension in the region and amid uncertainties about the condition of the Iranian supreme leader.
