The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that NATO cannot intervene to open the Strait of Hormuz, as this area is outside the Alliance's jurisdiction.
Speaking about the situation created in this strategic maritime corridor, Kallas emphasized that the issue has been discussed previously with NATO, but according to her, direct intervention by the Alliance is not possible due to mandate limitations.
"We have been in contact with NATO before, but this is really outside the NATO intervention area. That is why we have Operation Aspides, and there are member states willing to contribute, both to the 'coalition of the willing' and to the operation itself," she said.
Kallas added that the Strait of Hormuz is not a territory where NATO countries operate, emphasizing that for this reason current discussions focus on the role that EU member states can take.
According to her, it should first be clarified what member states are willing to do to guarantee navigation safety in this strategic area.
"There is also discussion that there could be intervention after the main fighting is over. But of course, there is a need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz now. So we will discuss this today," Kallas said.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important sea routes for global energy transport, and any blockage of it could have a major impact on international markets.
