Trump changes stance on Epstein files, demands their release; message to

US President Donald Trump called on Republican members of Congress to vote to release files related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, ending previous resistance to such action.

Trump's post on the social network Truth Social came after House Speaker Mike Johnson said he believed a vote to release Justice Department documents in the Epstein case would help reduce allegations that Trump had any connection to Epstein's abuse and trafficking of underage girls.

“House Republicans must vote to release the Epstein files because we have nothing to hide,” Trump wrote Sunday night. He added, “It is time to get out of this Democratic hoax perpetrated by the madmen of the radical left in order to take away the great success of the Republican Party, including our recent victory over the Democrats’ ‘Shutdown.’”

Although Trump and Epstein were photographed together decades ago, the president has said he cut off contact with him before Epstein's convictions. Emails released last week by a House committee showed Epstein believed Trump "knew about the girls," although it was not clear what that phrase meant.

Trump, who recently dismissed the Epstein dossier as a smear campaign by Democrats, has since directed the Justice Department to investigate prominent Democrats' ties to Epstein.

The battle over the disclosure of more Epstein-related documents, a topic on which Trump himself campaigned, has opened a rift with some of his allies in Congress.

Many of Trump's most loyal supporters believe the government is withholding sensitive documents related to Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died by suicide in prison in 2019, that would reveal the late financier's ties to powerful public figures.

Republicans hold the majority in the House of Representatives, with 219 seats, compared to 214 for Democrats.
