The Trump administration has drawn up a plan to deploy 1,000 Louisiana National Guard troops to assist with urban police operations in the US state, according to a Washington Post article today citing Pentagon documents.
The US president is seeking to make crime a central issue of his policy, despite the fact that violent crime rates have fallen in many US cities.
The crackdowns he has ordered in several Democratic-run cities have sparked protests, including a demonstration in Washington last weekend attended by several thousand people.
According to the Washington Post, the proposal envisions the military participating in law enforcement operations in cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
According to Pentagon plans, the National Guard deployment will last until September 30, 2026, although no specific date has been given for the start of the operation.
As the documents explain, the Pentagon is considering a proposal that would see National Guard members act as law enforcement aides in high-crime neighborhoods. They would also contribute to anti-drug operations and provide “logistical support” to local authorities.
The proposal, based on a request from Louisiana's Republican Governor, Jeff Landry, has not yet been approved by federal or state officials, the American newspaper pointed out.
Last week, Trump said he might send federal troops to Louisiana to deal with crime, something he has already done in Washington. The US president said his administration was considering sending troops to Chicago "or a place like New Orleans."
Last Friday, the Republican said he would send National Guard members to Memphis, Tennessee, to fight crime.
