US President Donald Trump has hinted at possible developments in his efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine, but chose not to provide any concrete details during a meeting with reporters at the White House.
Asked in the Oval Office if he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said: "I learned things that will be very interesting. I believe in the coming days you will learn something. You will see for yourself."
Trump did not comment on what the consequences would be if a direct meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not take place, adding only: "We'll see what happens. We'll see what they do and what the outcome is. I'm watching it very closely."
On August 22, Trump said he would know “what to do” about the Ukraine issue within two weeks, a deadline that expires on Friday. However, with the deadline approaching, it remains unclear whether there will be a clear initiative from his side, or if it will be another enigmatic statement from a leader known for his ambiguous but bombastic style.
Trump, who has promised he can end the war in Ukraine "within 24 hours" if he returns to the White House, continues to use this topic as one of the cornerstones of his 2024 campaign. /CNN
