A serious incident occurred on Tuesday in the center of Marseille, where a man armed with knives and a bat was neutralized by police after injuring at least five people. One of the injured is in critical condition, the local prosecutor announced.
According to prosecutor Nicolas Bessone, the attacker was a Tunisian national legally residing in France. He had been evicted from a hotel for non-payment of rent and returned carrying two knives and a stick, carrying out violent attacks in the room he had abandoned, on the hotel manager, his son and several passers-by.
Dramatic footage and testimonies show that after the arrest attempt, during which he tried to shoot at officers, the police reacted by shooting the aggressor dead.
In a crowded area near the Old Port, police forces were immediate and the place, where the event took on dramatic proportions, was immediately surrounded to facilitate emergency intervention. One victim is in serious condition, while the others, including the manager and his son, are out of danger.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to visit Marseille on Tuesday evening to express support for the authorities and to be closely informed about the event.
